Adding Adjustable Cover to Simon’s Exposed Deck

Simon’s large timber deck was positioned directly outside the home’s sliding doors, but the open area had no protection from strong sun or changing weather.

To provide flexible coverage across the main outdoor area, we installed a 6 × 4m white Tasman motorised louvre roof.

Making Better Use of a Large Deck

The system was mounted to the house above the sliding doors, with two posts supporting the outer edge of the structure. This configuration keeps the area beneath the roof largely open, without placing additional posts through the centre of the deck.

The white frame also works with the existing facade, helping the 24m² structure feel connected to the house rather than visually separate from it.

Adjustable Shade and Natural Light

The motorised louvres allow Simon to adjust the amount of light and shade over the deck. The blades can be opened when more daylight is preferred, angled to reduce direct sun, or closed when greater weather protection is required.

This adjustability was particularly useful because the roof sits directly outside a major glazed opening. Unlike a fixed solid roof, the louvre system allows the level of coverage to change throughout the day.

Integrated LED lighting within the frame provides additional illumination over the deck after sunset.

The finished installation gives Simon more control over a previously exposed outdoor area while keeping the deck open, functional and visually aligned with the home.

For a similar project, the main considerations are the required coverage, available wall-mounting position and the number and placement of supporting posts.
