A Custom Tasman Pergola for Tim’s Spa Pool Deck

A wide timber deck with a spa pool is a solid backyard setup. But sitting in the spa isn't very comfortable if you're getting hit by a cold breeze or baking in the direct sun.

Tim Lawrence had a long stretch of newly built decking running along the back of his house, but it was fully exposed to the elements. He wanted to shelter the spa pool and the area right outside his sliding doors so the space could be used year-round.

Because the area was long and rectangular, a single standard pergola wasn't going to cut it. The practical fix was installing two custom-sized Tasman pergolas side-by-side to create one continuous stretch of cover.

The project at a glance

  • Client: Tim

  • Model: Two custom Tasman louvre roofs joined together

  • Finish: Crisp white aluminium to match the home's exterior

  • Setting: Wide timber deck with a spa pool next to a weatherboard home

  • Key features: Multiple drop-down blinds and a flush fit against the house

Stretching the coverage

By linking two frames together, the structure spans the entire usable width of the deck.

This layout does two jobs at once. One half provides dedicated, heavy-duty shelter right over the spa. The other half acts like a deep porch over the sliding doors, keeping the sun off the glass and giving Tim a dry place to step out of the house.

Wind protection for the spa

A louvre roof handles the rain and sun, but on an open deck, the wind is usually the biggest issue.

Tim added custom drop-down blinds to the front and sides of the structure. When the blinds are lowered, they cut the breeze and hold the heat in around the spa, making a huge difference on cooler evenings. The light-grey fabric also adds a layer of privacy from the neighbouring fence line without completely blocking the light.

Tucked cleanly against the house

If you look closely at the installation, the back beam of the pergola is tucked right up under the home's eaves and sits practically flush with the weatherboards.

This precise placement is important. It stops rain from pouring down the gap between the house and the spa, ensuring the transition from the indoor living room to the outdoor deck stays completely dry.

Need to cover a long deck or a spa?

Standard sizes don't work for every backyard. If you have a wide deck or a specific area like a spa pool that needs sheltering from the wind and rain, linking two units together is a smart way to get exactly the coverage you need.
