Adding Weather Protection Outside Simon’s Sliding Doors

Simon’s sliding doors open directly onto a small paved area beside the house. With no roof above it, the space offered little protection when entering or leaving the home during rain, while adding a permanent solid roof would have reduced the natural light reaching the doors and adjoining interior.

We installed a 3 × 2m grey City Window Door Awning Canopy to cover the paved landing and part of the connecting pathway.

Cover Without Posts in the Walkway

The canopy is mounted directly to the exterior wall and projects 2 metres over the outdoor area. Because it does not require front support posts, the curved path and access around the sliding doors remain unobstructed.

The 3-metre width provides coverage across the main opening rather than sheltering only the door itself. Its slim grey aluminium frame also coordinates with the existing window and door frames without adding a heavy structure to the facade.

Protection While Retaining Natural Light

Bayer® 2mm polycarbonate panels form the roof of the canopy. Their transparent finish allows daylight to continue reaching the glazed doors while providing overhead protection from direct sun and rain.

The panels are impact-resistant and UV-resistant, while the aluminium frame offers a durable, low-maintenance structure for an exposed exterior location.

A built-in gutter and downpipe collect runoff from the canopy and direct it to the side, helping prevent water from falling directly across the front edge of the paved area.

The finished installation gives Simon a more protected transition between the house and backyard while keeping the area open, bright and easy to access.
