Connecting the House to the Boat Shed: Lisa’s Dual Pergola Setup

When you have a deck that spans from your back door all the way to a boat shed, you have a lot of usable space—but also a lot of exposure.
Lisa’s property features a massive timber deck that links the main living areas to the garage and boat shed. Rather than trying to cover the entire span with one oversized roof, the solution was to install two separate Tasman Motorised Pergolas. This approach provides shelter exactly where it’s needed while keeping the walkway between them open to the sky.

The 6x3m: Extending the Living Room
The first unit is a 6 x 3 m Tasman attached directly to the main house. This serves as the primary outdoor lounge. Because it is fixed to the house, we installed a custom flashing kit along the connection point. This technical detail is important—it ensures rainwater flows off the house roof and into the pergola’s gutter system, rather than dripping down between the fascia and the beam.
To handle the afternoon sun or cross-breeze, this unit also features a motorised blind on the far side, enclosing the space when needed.

The 4x4m: The Boat Shed "Landing"
Further down the deck, a freestanding 4 x 4 m Tasman sits right next to the boat shed entrance. Positioned here, it acts as a staging area or a secondary covered spot for when work is happening in the garage. It breaks up the long stretch of timber and visually balances the large white sliding doors of the shed.

Visually Tying the Property Together
Despite being apart, the matching aesthetics make the whole backyard feel connected.
-
The Palette: The Black frame creates a sharp border against the white brick house and the white louvres overhead match the joinery and roofline.
-
The Lighting: Both units have integrated LED strips, meaning the deck remains functional from the back door to the boat shed well into the evening.

Thinking about coverage for a large area?
You don't always need one giant roof. Splitting the coverage can often be more practical, giving you shelter at key points without blocking all the natural light.
