Extending the Usability of a Fixed Architectural Overhang
A modern home with a deep concrete overhang has a significant advantage when it comes to outdoor living. The alcove beneath the roofline offers a built-in pocket of shelter, complete with a ceiling fan and recessed downlights right outside the sliding glass doors. However, a fixed structure like this can only protect a set footprint. When the sun angles low in the afternoon, the heat and glare cut right under the concrete beam, rendering the edge of the patio unusable.
For Elly’s home, the core challenge was extending that usable footprint without compromising the clean, contemporary lines of the facade. Building a permanent roof extension was out of the question—it would have permanently blocked natural light from entering the lower level, disrupted the sightlines of the timber batten detailing above, and altered the architecture of the house. The space required an on-demand barrier that could appear and disappear as the weather changed.
The solution was a 4 x 2.5 m Rainier full cassette motorised retractable awning.
Preserving the clean facade
Instead of altering the building's structure, the awning’s casing was mounted directly to the face of the white concrete architectural band. When retracted, the entire mechanism and fabric roll into a slim, sealed black cassette. It effectively mirrors the dark tones of the lower walls and window trim, serving as a subtle design accent rather than a bulky add-on.
On-demand coverage and integrated lighting
When the sun or light rain starts pushing past the roofline, the motorised arms project outward, adding an extra 2.5 metres of canopy over the deck. This nearly doubles the patio's protected footprint, keeping outdoor lounge furniture cool and shaded. Because the system relies entirely on heavy-duty folding arms anchored to the concrete beam, the patio floor remains free of posts or obstructions.
The folding arms are also equipped with integrated LED strip lights. When extended in the evening, these strips supplement the existing patio downlights, distributing soft illumination across the extended seating area. It allows the outdoor space to effortlessly transition from a sun-drenched deck to a fully sheltered evening lounge.
