At Gemma’s home in Paremoremo, the seating area sits beside the pool rather than against the house. A freestanding Tasman works well here because the cover can sit exactly where it is needed.

We installed the 5.9 × 3m pergola over the paved area, with the outdoor sofa underneath. It creates shade and cover for the seating without having to bring the structure back to the house.

There are no side walls or screens, so the view across the pool, lawn and surrounding trees stays open. The glass pool fencing helps with that too.

The motorised louvres can be opened to let more light through, then closed when more cover is wanted.

It’s a simple setup, but a good example of why a freestanding pergola can work so well around a pool — the cover goes where people actually sit.
