From Exposed Terrace to a Sheltered Outdoor Room

A tiled balcony offers a great extension to a living area, but when it is fully exposed to the elements, its use is strictly dictated by the weather.

Pauline and David had a long, tiled terrace right outside a row of glass sliding doors. The original space was completely open to the sky, meaning the heat of the day hit the glass directly, and any rain made the area unusable. They needed a way to cover the space without cluttering the walkway.

The practical fix was a 5 x 3 m Baltic manual wall-mounted louvre roof.

The project at a glance

  • Client: Pauline & David

  • Structure: Baltic manual wall-mounted louvre roof

  • Size: 5 x 3 m

  • Finish: Dark powder-coated aluminium

  • Setting: Tiled upper-level terrace with a low parapet wall

Maximizing a narrow footprint

On a balcony or terrace, floor space is limited. By choosing a wall-mounted model, the back beam attaches directly to the exterior wall above the sliding doors, eliminating the need for rear posts entirely.

The front posts are positioned tightly against the low parapet wall. This layout keeps the walkway clear and leaves plenty of room for outdoor furniture and potted plants without anything obstructing the doors.

Blocking the rain and sun

The 5 x 3 m frame provides a deep awning over the glass doors. During a shower, the closed louvres keep the area immediately outside the house dry, as shown by the contrast between the wet exposed tiles and the sheltered footprint.

This allows the homeowners to leave the doors open for ventilation even when it is raining. When the weather clears, the louvres can be tilted open to let the sunlight back into the house and allow heat to escape.

Simple manual control

This Baltic unit is manually operated via a discreet hand crank hanging near the wall. This avoids the need to run electrical wiring outside or hire an electrician for the installation. It is a straightforward, mechanical system that provides reliable control over the sun and rain.

Have an exposed balcony or terrace?

If you have an upper-level patio that is too hot or too wet to use regularly, a wall-mounted louvre roof can give you the shelter you need while keeping the floor plan open.
