Two 8-Metre Pergolas Completing a Massive Backyard

When you have a backyard this size—complete with a pool, glass fencing, and an outdoor fireplace—a single umbrella isn’t going to cut it. Ryan’s property in Auckland had all the features of a resort, but the large open spaces meant there was nowhere to actually sit out of the sun.

He needed a way to shade the deck against the house and create a sheltered spot down by the pool, without making the yard feel cluttered. The solution was installing two matching 8 x 4 m Tasman Motorised Pergolas—one attached to the home, and one standing free as a poolside cabana.

1. The Deck Extension (Wall Mounted)

The first pergola is an expansive 8 x 4 m wall-mounted unit fixed directly to the house.

  • Covering the sliders: The sheer width of the 8m frame spans across two sets of sliding doors, effectively doubling the size of the internal living area.

  • Clean connection: By mounting it to the wall, we kept the deck clear of extra posts near the doors, preserving the flow from the kitchen to the barbecue area.

2. The Pool House (Freestanding)

Across the lawn, the second 8 x 4 m unit creates a destination zone next to the outdoor fireplace.

  • A "Room" by the pool: This freestanding structure turns the poolside patio into a proper lounge. It’s large enough to cover a full sofa set and dining area.

  • Weather protection: This unit is fitted with retractable blinds. When the wind picks up or the evening gets cool, Ryan can drop the screens to enclose the space, keeping the heat from the fireplace in and the breeze out.

Why this layout works

Using two identical pergolas ties the large property together. The White finish was chosen to contrast against the grey weatherboard of the house and the dark fencing, keeping the look crisp and modern. Instead of one massive roof that might have blocked the light, splitting the coverage into two zones keeps the pool area open and sunny while providing shelter exactly where people want to sit.
